I’m Gonna Sit Right Down and Write Myself a Letter

“I’m gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
I’m gonna write words, oh, so sweet
They’re gonna knock me off my feet”

Marketing, styles, and the new client, want something different.  ACK!!!!!!!!!  I have been avoiding it, and avoiding it, but I have had to change the style of my paintings.  I became known for my bright vibrant colours, flora and fauna on paintings, fabrics and furniture.  NOW, I have had to come up with something different.
This has been a daunting task.  A Gallery owner recently asked me to have some new paintings to display for his gallery.  Abstracts, photography, and the super modern, and more monochromatic pieces are what seem to be selling now.
So, I set about coming up with a plan, and something I could be happy with and proud to say is MY work.
Abstracts are no fun for me nor am I a photographer. WHAT TO DO?????  I studied, I did research for days!  I went to design studios, galleries, and even used some online resources for ideas and inspiration.

I went to Jerry’s and bought a 48″ x 60″ Gallery Wrap Canvas, and Silver leaf paint, silver leaf, chrome leaf, and metallic silver paint.  NOW!  I have decided to go with my “Chiaroscuro-esk”  technique, with a more stylized, moderne twist.  It is next to impossible for me to venture far from my classical roots.

With a nod to Hurricane Irma blowing outside my garage, I set about my first NEW painting…  A Theme of Zeus!  Layers and Layers and Layers of Silvers, chromes and leaf, slide between Layers of clear resin layers.  This new work is already 6 layers deep. This layering technique looks in person like EGLOMISE’!!
 Art Deco meets Contemporary Modern.

This is something I can be proud of, and I enjoyed the challenge of creating depth, and an image using only one tone. You cannot get the effect of this painting from my photo shown here, but in person, you can see all the way through the 6 layers to the base silver background.  An artist friend of mine said that she thought it was METAL RELIEF from this photo.  WHOOO HOOOO!!!!!

I was so fortunate to not lose power.  So I was able to paint, and spend continuous hours finishing this painting with no interruptions.
Now, I will be creating two narrow paintings which can flank each side of Zeus.  Keeping with the more stylized, deco look, I did a preliminary watercolour of two women for these paintings.

It is EXTREMELY hard to change, and to think differently, especially after doing something a certain way for years.  I had to Sit right down and write myself a letter…to help me remember to THINK DIFFERENTLY.  To have a “new painting paradigm”!
Stay tuned for more new paintings to come!
